Startup Rangers is a guerrilla marketing campaign launched in August by QuHarrison Terry, a student at the University of Wisconsin studying computer science. The premise is Startup Rangers go around Madison wearing their red Power Ranger suits and acting as walking billboards for their clients.
The rangers take selfies, engage with bystanders and blog daily about the company for which they’re advertising. The goal is to help startups, which are often strapped for cash, reach the maximum visibility to help their business grow.
“I felt like Startup Rangers was a humorous way to gain exposure for startup companies in the Madison area,” Terry said. “We definitely have been attracting startup companies that have college students and millennials as part of their staff.”
The inspiration for Startup Rangers came from nostalgia marketing and the culture millennial’s have created around nostalgia. As a life-long entrepreneur, Terry gained much experience from his earlier business ventures.
One of the other businesses Terry founded when he was just 19 is VNM USA, a full service advertising agency. That experience helped him understand how to quickly develop a minimum viable product, sell and learn from the market, all of which played a critical role in launching Startup Rangers.
So far, Startup Rangers has worked with clients such as Sconnie Nation, an apparel company, and Rezi, a resume optimization service.
“Startup Rangers has been a really fun project to work on,” Terry said. “We’re excited to see what will happen with it in the future.”
