With summer approaching and the Farmers’ Market in mind, the development of a community project that supports locally produced food seems downright tasty. Food Enterprise and Economic Development (FEED) Kitchens broke ground today at Northgate Shopping Center for its food business incubator.
“Producing local food is so important, but often there is not an affordable way for people within the community to do it,” Ellen Barnard, FEED Kitchens chair, said. “FEED will provide a way for us to do just that. We are so excited, because the groundbreaking signifies we are one step closer to accomplishing that goal.”
The FEED facility is planned to hold five commercial kitchens, with specialized equipment for baking; produce preparation and processing; and deli prep and meat processing.
Construction is expected to begin immediately and conclude by August with hopes of opening in September. FEED selected Engineered Construction, Inc, as the general contractor for the project, and Iconica as the architect.
“We will also have a training kitchen available for non-profit groups and cooking instructors who will teach food service and preparation skills,” Barnard said. “This way people can learn to cook and process food for their own consumption along with gaining experience to work in the food service industry.”
Currently, Madison College, REAP Food Group, Community Action Coalition, Yum Tum Organic Baby Food, Mad City Fry Guy Food Cart, Polly’s Preserves & Jams, Stubborn Mule Catering and Dean’s Xpress Catering are committed to using the facility.
