Locally made condiments that use 95 percent local products are finding their way to nearby store shelves thanks to the 100 Mile Sauce Company. The Madison-based company, founded by Jeff Cullen, Scott Kelsing and Bobby Marshment-Howell, started in 2013 and began producing retail products in the spring of last year.
The first condiment the company started producing was ketchup. It’s sweetened naturally with locally made honey instead of the usual ingredient, high fructose corn syrup. Since perfecting the ketchup recipe, the founders have used the ketchup as a base for BBQ sauces that have placed in competitions at the Wisconsin State Fair.
“One of our goals is to try to eliminate farmers tilling their produce in the ground because they couldn’t sell it,” Kelsing said. “We want local food to become more than a fad and become the mainstream way of thinking.”
Some of the key local ingredients used to make products include tomatoes, habaneros, cucumbers, beets, onions, garlic, spinach, apples, Wisco Pop and Gentle Breeze Honey. These ingredients are sourced from more than 10 different farmers and suppliers in the area.
The company looks to expand its resume next month as it will begin releasing Matchstick Pickles.
100 Mile Sauce Company products are currently sold at Northside Farmers Market, Jenifer Street Market, Woodman’s West Liquor, Hy-Vee, Riley’s Wines of the World, Stoughton Garden Center, Funk’s Pub, The Free House Pub and Waypoint Public House.
