A team of University of Wisconsin College of Engineering students will compete in the 2019 SpaceX Hyperloop Competition this week at the SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif., the department announced today.

According to a release, the competition pits teams from around the world to build and test the best, ultrafast futuristic form of transportation. If a team’s pod is picked, it will get to send its pod down the mile-long vacuum-sealed hyperloop test track.

The Wisconsin team, called Badgerloop, has updated its pod’s direct-drive propulsion system and revamped its electronics containment to more effectively contain the sensitive components in an airtight seal.

It is the fourth year that the UW team has competed in the event, earning two back-to-back innovation awards and recognition for excellence in previous years.
