Matthew Sonnentag’s business plan for Blue Ribbon Outdoors won the third annual Madison College Challenge held last Friday at Madison College’s Truax Campus.
“I’m speechless,” Sonnentag said. “I certainly didn’t expect to win with all the great business plans entered in the contest.”
Blue Ribbon Outdoors provides professional guide service for outdoor adventures, including hunting and ice fishing. Sonnentag takes home $5,000, plus media training from Madison Noteworthy and 1,000 business cards from Sourcehouse.
Sonnentag said he will use his winnings to launch the charter boat portion of his business.
Second place and $2,500 went to Emma Bohorfoush for her Bicycle Closet Cafe idea, while third place and $1,500 went to Jon Compean for his Barnwood Artifacts idea. All finalists also received a three-month membership to 100state.
The business plan competition is open to students enrolled at Madison College in at least one credit or non-credit course during the 2013-14 or 2014-15 school years. A feasibility analysis was due March 30, followed by the business plan April 27.
Judges included Sean Cleary of Cleary Holdings Inc. and Cleary Building Corp. and Dave Volz of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.
