Cellular Dynamics International announced this week that it received $16 million from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to create three induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines for each of 3,000 healthy and diseased donors.
According to a release from CDI, tissue samples will be taken from patients suffering from diseases such as Alzheimer’s or liver.
“The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine is a world leader in funding stem cell research,” Bob Palay, chairman and CEO of CDI, said in a statement. “We see (these grants) as a validation of CDI’s iCell operating system as the premier platform for high quality human iPSCs and differentiated cells.”
CIRM also awarded the Coriell Institute for Medical Research nearly $10 million to set up and biobank the iPSC lines; CDI will be the primary subcontractor for the project.
