While sitting in a board meeting to plan Madison Magnet’s annual golf outing, Will Robus couldn’t help but think of ways to make the event more exciting for the organization’s members. Three years later, what started as a simple daydream has become an accessible live-scoring system for golf tournaments and group outings.
Little Green Pencil, founded by Robus, Stuart McIntosh and Steve Ramig, enhances a golfer’s experience by providing real-time score updates and social media interaction through the Live Leader Board, which has a dedicated URL for participants and outsiders to follow along. Scoring is updated through text messaging.
“Registered golfers also can post messages via text to the message board, and anyone can tweet messages and photos using the event’s hashtag,” Robus said. “These are instantly published in the Leader Board’s message feed.”
By using the hashtag #LilGreenPencil, golfers can send messages about anything regarding the event from special hole events to logistical messages.
Noting that the Midwest has 26 percent of the nation’s golf courses, Little Green Pencil has its sights set on introducing the Live Leader Board to golf outings throughout the region. Past events that have used the company’s services include the Mike & Jessica McCarthy Golf Invitational and the Ronald McDonald Golf Classic.
In addition to working with big names like Packers Coach Mike McCarthy, Little Green Pencil gained attention in June by taking third place in the category of business services in the annual Governor’s Business Plan Contest.
