Today, the use of technology is an essential part of many people’s lives. It seems like everywhere you look, people are on their smartphone, tablet or computer, making it more difficult to connect with peers and create friendships. Co-Founders Nikki Brown and McKenzie Rabenn recognized this phenomenon as they co-founded UnPlugged Events, LLC.
“Our mission is to create events that allow adults to connect in real life, without technology,” Rabenn said. “We want to create a new way for people to create memorable experiences that involve getting outside, trying new things and disconnecting from technology. We want to disconnect to reconnect.”
UnPlugged Events hosts a “summer camp for grown-ups” called Camp Iwanabreak, which provides an outlet for busy and innovative professionals to unplug, play and connect with each other and themselves. Activities include having campfires, playing games, sleeping in bunk bedsĀ and eating communal meals.
The first event is Aug. 21-23 at Wyalusing State Park. Registration is $350 and includes lodging and meals.
Currently, UnPlugged is monetized through individual registrations and corporate sponsorships.
“We hope to work with companies who are aligned with our vision of bringing people together, creating fun and taking time to recharge,” Rabenn said. “We especially hope to partner with Madison’s huge local food scene to provide our campers with delicious, local and sustainable meals.”
Down the road, the company looks to provide services for businesses and human resource professionals interested in helping their employees recharge, offer more events such as retreats, outings or parties and expand into family programming.
