Ries’ inspiration for lean startups comes from the lean manufacturing process in Japanese factories. The concept is about taking a scientific approach to creating and managing startups.
According to his online bio, Ries was named entrepreneur-in-residence at Harvard Business School in 2010 and is currently an IDEO Fellow. In 2007, BusinessWeek named the San Francisco resident one of the Best Young Entrepreneurs of Tech.
