Michael Filbey, a young entrepreneur, has taken ambition to another level. While his classmates were focusing on high school finals, Filbey started the planning for his business Cbay, an online resale service.
Cbay’s goal is to make online selling as convenient and stress free as possible. When discussing how the idea developed, Filbey shared, “I began to realize that everyone has valuable stuff sitting around but few people have the time or know-how to sell it online.”
To sell an item with Cbay, a customer sends in the information on the product, and Cbay does all the work, including setting up a time for the buyer and seller to meet. For every sale, the customer receives 60 percent of the purchase price and is not charged if Cbay is not able to sell the item.
Filbey, who’s currently enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, credits his original idea for the business to when he was as young as 11 or 12 years old. It may have started with selling Beanie Babies and Pokémon cards, but the business has grown significantly since he realized the opportunity that existed for an online resale service.
The Massachusetts native feels that the charitable element of the company is what sets the business apart from other competitors. For each sale, 20 percent goes to Wellspring, whose mission is “to provide support and skills to people facing challenges to their financial, physical or emotional well-being.”
“Our charitable component is what keeps me going during the longer work days,” Filbey said. “We are passionate about helping the community.”
