The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation today announced it will help fund a joint venture between the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and Swoop Search LLC called Swoop-Med LLC.
The Wisconsin Technology Innovation Initiative (Wi2) also is committing to the $1 million seed fund, which will used by Swoop-Med to more rapidly identify and commercialize diagnostics and treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.
“Working with researchers at the medical school’s Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute, we believe we can uncover previously hidden patterns and relationships in the very complex (Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer’s Prevention) data set more quickly and easily than before,” Swoop Search CEO Paul Bottum, Ph.D., said in a statement. “These patterns and relationships could very well lead to the commercialization of new tools to detect and treat Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.”
According to a release, Swoop-Med is the first initiative established as a result of the new seed fund created by WEDC and Wi2 to support commercialization of medical technology developed by the University of Wisconsin.
Bottum founded Madison-based Swoop Search in 2011.
