The student team known as Power Wearables won the 2014 Qualcomm Innovation Competition for their MicroViolet Patch, the University of Wisconsin announced this week.
Mehdi Shokoueinejad, Akshay Kumar and Yei-Hwan Jung received $15,000 and will present their idea–which emits a controlled amount of UV radiation to wounds–to Qualcomm leaders in San Diego.
“Just as plants absorb sunlight and use chlorophyll to grow cells, we use light to expedite the cell-growing process,” Shokoueinejad said in a statement.
Second place was awarded to LeadOff, a sensor with the ability to attach to any athletic equipment, while third went to Zuntik, an online calender tool that allows users to aggregate any calenders into their computer, smartphone or tablet instantly.
Twenty-teams participated in this year’s competition.
